Get Your Brake Pads Replaced for Free During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we at Gabriel’s Automotive & Towing like to find ways to raise awareness and give back as part of the campaign. Every year we have a “Brakes for Breasts” campaign during the month of October, which has had some excellent results.

It’s a sobering statistic—every year, more than 40,000 people die of breast cancer, the vast majority of whom are women. While there have been some significant strides made in the last couple decades to raise awareness of the importance of breast cancer screenings and mammograms, and in terms of the kinds of treatment that are available for people who have been diagnosed with the disease, there is still a long way to go to getting those numbers down.

About the program

Each October, we are one of 139 other auto repair shops all over the country that offer free brake pads up to a $109 value—all you need to do is pay for the labor and any other parts you purchase during your service appointment. We then donate a portion of that brake service cost to the Cleveland Clinic Breast Cancer Vaccine Research Fund.

This program has its roots in 2011. It was started by Laura Frank and Leigh Anne Best, a pair of Ohio-based auto shop owners who decided they wanted to use their shops to encourage greater breast cancer awareness, activism and advocacy. They started the initial Brakes for Breasts fundraiser with five other auto mechanics located in their same local area.

The program was a huge success—even more so than anticipated. As a result, they began expanding it to other auto shops. The next year, there were 27 shops in 17 states that took part in the program, and they raised a combined total of $66,499.29 for breast cancer research. It’s amazing what can happen in just a single year!

The growth of the program has not ceased since then. The amount of money raised and the number of participating auto shops has gone up every single year. We are extremely proud to be a part of this worthwhile venture here at Gabriel’s Automotive & Towing. It’s remarkable how a single act of kindness and charity by a couple of businesswomen in Ohio has spread out all over the country and is now a massive philanthropic undertaking each year. Being able to have even just a small role in that is something we take great pride in.

There’s still a little bit of time left in October, so if you haven’t had your brake pads changed yet as part of the program, be sure to come on down and visit us at Gabriel’s Automotive & Towing to support this great cause and keep your vehicle in great driving shape for the fall and winter months.
